The parish of São Mateus, in São Mateus do Sul, was the target of vandalism and religious intolerance on the morning of last Monday (10).
According to information passed on by the church, the vandalism took place in broad daylight. Close to noon, a man entered the church and broke several images in the room of the saints, in the baptistery, the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and of the Patroness Nossa Senhora da Assunção. The tabernacle where the Eucharistic Jesus is located was not violated and neither were the images of angels damaged. In all, 28 images were broken.
Father Diego Ronaldo Nakalski informed that the images from the cameras are being analyzed. São Mateus do Sul has three parishes, and the one attacked is the oldest, founded in 1926. Churches and representatives of other religions issued notes repudiating the act, claiming to respect all types of beliefs and faith existing in society.
