A 28-year-old driver ran over two children who were playing on the ground in Xambrê , northwest Paraná. One of the children, just 9 months old, died instantly. The other was injured.

The accident happened this Saturday afternoon (6), in a leisure area of the city known as 'prainha'. The driver was maneuvering the vehicle, a Volkswagen Gol, near some kiosks and did not see the children playing on the ground.

He ended up running over the two girls, who were taken to the city hospital by family members. The youngest succumbed to her injuries and died. The other, a 1-year-old, was injured but not life-threatening.

The Military Police (PM) was triggered and attended the scene. The driver, known to the children's relatives, refused to take a breathalyzer test, but the police found that he showed signs of drunkenness. He was taken to the police station and the vehicle was impounded.
